Skincare Habits to Help Clear Acne

What is Acne?

Acne is a chronic, inflammatory skin disease that causes spots and pimples, especially on the face, shoulders, back, neck, chest, and upper arms. It ranges from whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, and cysts and affects both men and women. Although most commonly seen in puberty, acne can occur at any age. It is important to raise awareness about acne and its effects, which can often be uncomfortable, embarrassing, and even painful. Acne can also take a toll on confidence levels and emotional well-being. The good news is acne is not a contagious condition. There are many treatment options available to help control breakouts, reduce scarring, and achieve clear, beautiful skin.

What Causes Acne?

There are many factors that contribute to the development of acne, both internal and external. One of the main internal factors affecting acne production is hormonal. Increases in androgenic hormones (e.g. – testosterone and progesterone) can cause production of sebum. The greater the imbalance of androgenic hormones, the more likely an overproduction of sebum will occur and cause the lesions associated with acne. Other possible triggers for acne include:

  • Diet – diets high in sugar and simple carbohydrates may cause acne to develop or worsen existing acne
  • Pollution – particulate matter in the air can collect on your skin, block pores, and cause inflammation
  • Oil-based cosmetics/skincare – products that include oil are more likely to clog pores and exacerbate acne symptoms
  • Emotional stress – stress can trigger a fight or flight response in the body, causing oil glands to produce more oil and acne to flare

Acne begins in the pilosebaceous unit of the skin (image above). This unit includes the hair follicle, the hair shaft, and the sebaceous gland (which produces an oily/waxy substance called sebum). Sebum is released to protect the skin and is necessary for supple, flexible skin. However, sebum is sometimes overproduced, causing a buildup which leads to acne. The characteristic lesion or bump of acne is called a comedone (e.g. – blackheads and whiteheads).

Comedones are the primary lesion of acne. It is composed of small bumps (papules) frequently found on the forehead and chin of those with acne. There are two types of comedone:

  • Whitehead – comedone closed off to the skin's surface by another thin layer of skin/epidermis
  • Blackhead – comedone open to the air where the sebum in that area have become oxidized and black

    Grades of Acne

  • Grade I – least severe type of acne where comedones develop; no pustules and little, if any, inflammation
  • Grade II –increased inflammatory response surrounding the comedone and possibly a few pustules
  • Grade III – more inflammation and pustules vs. Grade II
  • Grade IV – most severe form of acne with deep inflammatory cysts; can be very painful and lead to scarring

Skincare Habits to Help Clear Acne

Acne can often feel like a never-ending cycle if left untreated. Here are additional tips aside from a skincare regimen to help in the healing process:

  • Wash face after sweating – Perspiration can worsen acne, especially when wearing a hat.
  • Wash hair regularly – Hair produces oils which get left behind on pillowcases at nighttime after sleeping. Too much oil can be a cause for more acne and clogged pores.
  • Wash face after sweating – Touching the face throughout the day can cause flare-ups and more bacteria to build up.
