Hyperpigmentation

What Is Hyperpigmentation?

There are several triggers which may cause pigment irregularities to appear on the surface of the skin. Any inflammatory process may lead to the side effect of hyperpigmentation surgical procedures, aesthetic procedures, acne, wound healing, and the number one trigger, sun exposure. Hyperpigmentation cannot be helped unless the strongest trigger, sun exposure, is dealt with properly. Aging skin is also more likely to show signs of hyperpigmentation. In the course of aging, free radicals are generated, and these excess free radicals cause the pigment process to maintain and continue over many years which lead to the irregular pigmentation.

There are five steps in the pigment process of the skin:

  • Trigger: Sun exposure, stimulus from estrogen, or potentially any inflammatory process may trigger hyperpigmentation.
  • Inflammation: The process started by one of many possible triggers.
  • Melanin Production: A cell called the melanocyte receives a signal from the inflammation process that it is time to produce melanin (the pigment seen in skin).
  • Melanin Transfer: Melanin moves from the melanocyte cells to the keratinocyte cells (at this stage, the pigment becomes visible).
  • Exfoliation: Cells move to the surface of the skin through the natural process of exfoliation.

What Causes Age Spots?

Age spots are a form of hyperpigmentation caused by sun damage to the skin. Solar free radicals hit the skin, penetrate the skin barrier, and cause damage at the cellular level. Sun exposure may also cause DNA damage and age spots are one of the resulting physical effects. Sun damage may also lead to elastosis (damage to elastin), wrinkles, impaired skin regeneration, and altered immunity related to increased risk of skin cancer. Sunscreens are essential in treating issues of pigment irregularity. They protect against sun exposure which is the strongest trigger of the development of age spots. Broad spectrum sunscreens that protect against both UVA and UVB rays are best to provide protection from sun exposure.

Studies have shown that application of iS Clinical products can stop sun damage at the cellular level and provide DNA photoprotection, thereby lessening the risk of photoaging and skin cancer. A complete regimen that concludes with an SPF product is vital for the health of skin cells.

What is Melasma?

Melasma is a type of hyperpigmentation that appears mainly on the nose, forehead, cheeks, and upper lip and is very difficult to treat. This irregular pigmentation is triggered by sun exposure, but also by estrogen. Melasma (a.k.a. – chloasma) is sometimes referred to as the “mask of pregnancy”, as it first appears in a butterfly pattern across the face and is the result of stimulation from estrogen.

A clinical study was conducted comparing iS Clinical’s Brightening Complex to other products designed to treat hyperpigmentation. The results of that study showed that Brightening Complex had significantly less inflammation markers than the other products. This is very important in treating melasma, as it is very difficult to control and inflammation hurts rather than helps. In addition to Brightening Complex, Brightening Serum is excellent for use in spot-treatment of irregularly pigmented areas of the skin.

How Can Hyperpigmentation Be Treated?

When looking for products to treat hyperpigmentation, it is important to pay special attention to the ingredients. A common ingredient in many brightening products is hydroquinone. While hydroquinone is currently approved for use by the FDA in the United States, the substance is banned in the European Union, Japan, and Australia. Its purpose is to kill melanocyte cells to slow the production of melanin but may actually cause worse hyperpigmentation issues and sometimes the disorder ochronosis.

iS Clinical has made advancements in formulation that are hydroquinone-free, anti-inflammatory, and treat all five steps in the pigmentation process. The special blend of botanical antioxidants in both the Brightening Complex and Brightening Serum are extremely efficient in treating not only hyperpigmentation, but also wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, and large pores.

iS Clinical created a regimen designed to effectively treat hyperpigmentation by combating all five steps in the scientific process of creating pigment within the skin cells.
